Article: A Toupee Gave Me New Courage and New Joy in Everyday Life

A Toupee Gave Me New Courage and New Joy in Everyday Life

Read Marcus' story about being young and living with hair loss, and how a toupee changed everything for him.

“Wow, your hair is really thin.”
Wow, you really look older.”
“Shouldn’t you just go to Turkey and get a new hairline done?”

I have heard those sentences so many times that I don’t even have enough fingers to count them. And I’ll be completely honest: It hurt!

I started losing my hair even before boarding school, and year after year it got worse. As a teenager, it hit my self-confidence hard to walk around with such thin hair. I felt like my hair was always a topic that could come up – at parties, birthdays, even on nights out, where I spent more energy hiding my hair than enjoying life.

I hated when it was windy, trying to hold my hair in place so I wouldn’t reveal the bald spot I was so afraid others would notice. Or when I dried my hair with a towel and feared how many strands would be left behind in the fabric. Small situations that mean nothing to others – but to me, they felt like huge defeats.

When I turned 18, I knew which way it was heading. I looked into a hair transplant, but was told I was too young. So I had to live out my last teenage years with an insecurity that constantly reminded me I wasn’t like the others.

But then – a few years later – came a turning point. The amazing Vibeke, who has been through a lot herself, recommended that I have a consultation with Toftild i Aarhus. I was skeptical at first, but I took the chance.

I had a consultation with a hairdresser who listened, understood, and showed me options I had never dared to hope for. And suddenly I could say, “I really want to be able to style my hair again.” And she replied, “You will with this one.” 🙌🏻

Even though it is expensive – and even though I was denied financial support, even after explaining how deeply it affected me mentally – I didn’t let it stop me. I chose myself. And today I stand here… with new hair, new courage, and a new joy in everyday life. I can look at myself in the mirror and smile again. I can walk out the door without fear. I feel like myself.

I owe a huge thank you to the amazing stylist at Toftild - Hair for Life, who gave me options and a result I didn’t think was possible. And especially to Vibeke – thank you for inspiring me to take the first step 🫶🏻

I’ve become a happy young man again. And if you’re sitting out there with an insecurity, big or small, I just want to say: You deserve to feel comfortable in your own body too. Sometimes it takes a decision, an investment – but trust me, you are worth it. 🌿
