Hair Donation – How to Do It

  • Your hair donation must be at least 30 cm (approx. 12 inches) and preferably longer if you can spare it ❤️ Your hair will naturally be in different lengths, so it does not matter if you have layers cut into your hair. Simply measure to the longest tip when your hair donation is gathered into a "ponytail."
  • Your hair donation must NOT be chemically treated, meaning bleached or permed. This weakens the hair structure, and the hairs from your donation have a higher risk of breaking during the production of a wig.
  • If you have colored your hair before donation, we can use it if it has been dyed with ammonia-free color and with a 1% tint. Please ask your own hairdresser about the contents before cutting your hair donation.
  • Your hair donation must be clean, completely dry, and thoroughly brushed. Remember to gather the hair into one bundle!
  • Register your hair donation by clicking the button below.
  • You are now ready to send or deliver your hair donation! We look forward to receiving it!

How to hand in your hair donation

In our salon

You can hand in your hair donation in person at one of our three locations: Aalborg, Aarhus and Frederiksberg. Here you can receive a diploma with your name on it.

Addresses and opening hours

Send by post

The hair donation can be sent to:
Toftild - Love is in the Hair
Budolfi Plads 9
9000 Aalborg, Denmark

It is very important to seal the hair securely with one or more tight elastics so the hair donation stays together during transport.

Does Toftild cut hair donations?

Unfortunately, we do not offer to cut hair donations ourselves. This is because we do not operate as a traditional salon, and our appointments are reserved for those who need help with wigs, toupees, etc. These individuals often have very few other places to turn.

Most people who wish to donate their hair have it cut by a Toftild Ambassador – You can find them right here. If you cannot find an ambassador near you, you are welcome to use your own hairdresser. Most hairdressers know how to handle it when you mention that it is for hair donation. Afterwards, you can either hand it in personally at one of our three stores or send it to us. Some Toftild Hair Donation ambassadors also collect hair donations and forward them to us.

Before cutting

The donated hair must be clean, completely dry and thoroughly brushed.

Worn or split ends do not need to be cut off beforehand.

Section the hair

We prefer that the hair is gathered into several smaller ponytails or braids secured with tight elastics. The hair should be cut approximately 2 cm above the elastic.

All cut ponytails/braids should be collected into one bundle and further sealed with 1–2 elastics at the top and possibly the bottom. This ensures that the hair donation remains aligned in the same growth direction, which is very important.

Layered hair can also be donated; the length is simply measured from the longest tip.

Why must the hair donation be 30 cm?

The longer the hair donation, the less hair goes to waste. When you make the generous gesture of donating your hair, we want to ensure that as much of it as possible can be used. Human hair wigs are hand-tied, meaning each individual strand is attached to a mesh base and secured with one or more knots. A certain length of hair is therefore required to tie the knots in the wig. In a hair donation, many of the hairs will naturally vary in length. Through experience, we have found that there is too much waste if the hair is not sufficiently long – and we think that is a shame.
