How is donated hair used?
The donated hair is used to produce wigs and alternative hair solutions for people experiencing hair loss. The donor hair is used for custom-made wigs and hairpieces, which we call “Hår for Livet by Toftild®”. All products made from donated hair carry the product name “Love is in the Hair”.
We use donated hair exclusively in very special collections such as Hår for Livet® and under the brand name “Love is in the Hair®”. Toftild is a company that contributes funds each year to various charities, allowing us to give something back to those who form the foundation of our business. Toftild supports organizations such as Danish Hospital Clowns, the Danish Cancer Society, the Danish Childhood Cancer Foundation, Look Good Feel Better, and Team Rynkeby.
Since 2017, Toftild has supported the Knæk Cancer campaign every year with Love is in the Hair® as the contributor, amounting to just over DKK 800,000 in total.
When you choose to donate your hair to Love is in the Hair®, you are also choosing to send your hair to a company that, in addition to producing wigs and hairpieces for those who have lost their own hair, supports charitable causes dedicated to the very same people. At Toftild, we believe this creates the greatest possible value from your hair donation.
Who receives the hair donation wigs?
Wigs made from donated hair are given to people who miss their own hair and are affected by involuntary hair loss. This may include cancer patients or people affected by autoimmune diseases, where alopecia is the most common. The wigs are made for both children and adults.
Please note that we cannot trace each individual hair donation to a specific recipient. Likewise, we cannot guarantee exactly who will receive the wig. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that your hair will go specifically to, for example, a child with cancer. What we can guarantee is that your donated hair is always used for wig production for people – both adults and children – who are affected by medical hair loss. For them, you make a huge difference ❤️

How Love is in the Hair® began
In December 2015, Lise and Claus Toftild travelled to Toftild’s long-standing partner and manufacturer in China to personally deliver the first collection of donated hair and officially launch the project. The first production of wigs was created from just 15 kg of hair and based on Toftild’s own design. It was the first time the manufacturer had produced a separate batch of hair delivered for a very specific purpose. The first production resulted in many beautiful wigs and took approximately six months to complete. All the wigs – then and now – are handmade and created from donated hair that has been sorted and prepared for production using traditional techniques. Wig production is therefore largely manual. Since then, the wigs have brought great joy to many recipients. Toftild covers all expenses related to wig production, hair sorting, etc.

Facts about wig production
On average, approximately 4–5 unsorted ponytails are needed to make one full wig. All donated hair is sorted and gathered into bundles by us so that it is uniform in length, color, and texture. In the final sorting process at the factory, a portion of the hair is discarded because the strands are simply too short. You can see the process of sorting hairs from a ponytail by length here. At Toftild, we only carry out this sorting ourselves when designing new wigs. Up to 40% of the hair in a bundle may be removed because it is too short. This is also why we prefer to receive hair that is as long as possible – ideally a minimum of 30 cm – to ensure that as little hair as possible goes to waste.
Today, all hair preparation and the production of wigs primarily take place in the East, for example in China, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, or the Philippines. Wig production in Denmark is very limited and today usually only takes place in theatres, where the traditional craft of wig making is still practiced.
