Can You Get a Subsidy for a Wig?
Yes, you can. If you have permanent, disfiguring baldness as a result of illness, surgery, or an accident, you can apply to your municipality for a subsidy for a wig. The caseworkers in your municipality will determine whether you are eligible for a wig subsidy. You apply via borger.dk under “Apply for Body-Worn Assistive Devices”.

Please note that this is a subsidy, and it is not certain that the municipality will cover the full cost of the wig. The municipality provides support for the most suitable and least expensive assistive device on the market. If you choose a more expensive wig than the one subsidized, you simply pay the difference yourself. Likewise, remember to apply to the municipality BEFORE you purchase/order a wig.
If you have been granted approval for a wig by the municipality, it is your own responsibility to remember to renew it once a year if you still need the wig.

Free Choice of Supplier
Please remember that you are always free to choose where you would like to purchase your wig – regardless of which supplier your municipality has an agreement with.
The financial support follows you, meaning you can choose Toftild even if another supplier is listed on your approval.
Financial Support for Wigs as a Cancer Patient
Please note: The financial support described below is part of the Danish healthcare system. If you live outside Denmark, please check with your local healthcare authority for applicable support programmes in your country.
If you have cancer, your treatment may cause temporary hair loss. You are entitled to financial support for the purchase of either a wig or headwear, and you can always choose where you wish to use your support. You are not bound by the hospital’s list of approved suppliers.
A wig or headwear is considered a medical aid intended to compensate for the side effects of your treatment. In the case of chemotherapy, hair loss is temporary, and the subsidy is usually granted only once.
In 2026, you can receive DKK 4,453 incl. VAT in financial support for a wig. If you choose a wig that costs more than the subsidy, you only pay the difference. If you prefer headwear, scarves, or turbans, your 2026 subsidy is DKK 1,682.23 incl. VAT. The subsidy amount is the same in all regions of Denmark, but there may be slight differences in how the payment is processed. The amount is adjusted annually at the beginning of the year in all regions.
North Denmark Region
If you purchase your wig or headwear in-store, we will handle the settlement directly with the region. You only pay if there is a difference between the total purchase price and the subsidy. If you purchase headwear online, you must submit your receipt to the region, which will then transfer the amount to your NemKonto.
Central Denmark Region
If you are a patient in the Central Denmark Region, you must pay upfront for your wig or headwear, both in-store and online. Afterwards, you must submit your receipt to the region, which will transfer the subsidy to your NemKonto.
Region of Southern Denmark
You can visit one of our stores in Aalborg, Aarhus, or Frederiksberg, and we will handle the settlement with the region. You can also purchase headwear online and then submit your receipt to the region, which will transfer the amount to your NemKonto.
Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand
If you purchase your wig or headwear in our Frederiksberg store, we will settle the amount directly with the region. You only pay if there is a difference between the total purchase price and the subsidy. If you purchase headwear online, you must pay upfront and then send both your prescription and order number to us at support@toftild.com. We will then invoice the region and refund the amount to you.
